NumSense-1: Understanding Number Sense and Decimal Place Values
Test Details- Subject: Basic Mathematics
- Category: Core Understanding
- Suggested Grade Level: 1 thru 6
This test will identify misunderstandings in number sense by exploring the following:
- Concepts of number sense, whole numbers and decimal place value
- Place value error across 0.001 through 1,000,000,000
- Error in understanding how to count

- If the student answered A, there is a place value error across 100.
- If the student answered B, the student just adds 4 to 99. There is a place value error across 100.
- If the student answered C, the student does not know when a new place value occurs. There is a place value error across 100.
- If the student answered D, the student answered correctly.
- If the student answered E, the student is confused by the question and results in an error pattern unable to be diagnosed.
ADWN-001: Addition With Whole Numbers
Test Details- Subject: Basic Mathematics
- Category: Basic Arithmetic Functions
- Suggested Grade Level: 1 thru 6
This diagnostic test explores the following:
- Basic rules of addition of whole numbers
- The concept of place value and carrying to the proper place value column
- Grouping
- The treatment of zero
- Vertical vs Horizontal formatting

- If the student answered A, the student saw 2 zeros in the expression and included those in answer.
- If the student answered B, the student writes one when adding zeros, because “something was added”.
- If the student answered C, the student changes or reversed place value in sum.
- If the student answered D, the student answered correctly.
- If the student answered E, the student is confused by the question and results in an error pattern unable to be diagnosed.
SBWN-001: Subtraction With Whole Numbers
Test Details- Subject: Basic Mathematics
- Category: Basic Arithmetic Functions
- Suggested Grade Level: 1 thru 6
This diagnostic test explores the following:
- Basic rules of addition of whole numbers
- The concept of place value and carrying to the proper place value column
- Grouping
- The treatment of zero
- Vertical vs Horizontal formatting

- If the student answered A, the student answered correctly.
- If the student answered B, in multiple digit subtracting, student will subtract from left to right, resulting in a regrouping problem.
- If the student answered C, the student renames incorrectly when crossing over zeros in a minuend.
- If the student answered D, the student subtracts the lesser digit from the greater digit regardless of the digit being the minuend or the subtrahend and ignoring order and renaming.
- If the student answered E, the student is confused by the question and results in an error pattern unable to be diagnosed.
MXWN-001: Multiplication With Whole Numbers
Test Details- Subject: Basic Mathematics
- Category: Basic Arithmetic Functions
- Suggested Grade Level: 1 thru 6
This diagnostic test explores the following:
- Basic rules of addition of whole numbers
- The concept of place value and carrying to the proper place value column
- Grouping
- The treatment of zero
- Vertical vs Horizontal formatting

- If the student answered A, the student answered correctly.
- If the student answered B, in double digit multiplication, student does not adjust the second row to allow for the new partial answer being a product of ten, hundred, thousand, etc. Problems w/ multiple digit factors: in working through, doesn’t record # in correct place value.
- If the student answered C, in double digit multiplication, student does not carry and rename, but simply writes the fact in full under each column. Doesn’t rename. Writes partial product in each PV position.
- If the student answered D, in double digit multiplication, student does not multiply each digit by each factor in the lower factor, instead they multiply only one column or only two. Each column is determined as several separate multiplication problems.
- If the student answered E, the student is confused by the question and results in an error pattern unable to be diagnosed.
DVWN-001: Division With Whole Numbers
Test Details- Subject: Basic Mathematics
- Category: Basic Arithmetic Functions
- Suggested Grade Level: 1 thru 6
This diagnostic test explores the following:
- Basic rules of addition of whole numbers
- The concept of place value and carrying to the proper place value column
- Grouping
- The treatment of zero
- Vertical vs Horizontal formatting

- If the student answered A, the student answered correctly.
- If the student answered B, the student is misaligning the quotient without respect to place value in that they reverse the digits instead of putting them in proper position.
- If the student answered C, the student is in XXXX/X dividing each digit of dividend by divisor and setting that in the place above the digit divided.
- If the student answered D, the student does not place the partial quotient in the appropriate place value and thus may change the answer by placing a mistaken zero to allow for the room left over.
- If the student answered E, the student is confused by the question and results in an error pattern unable to be diagnosed.
